OCTOBER

It’s hard to believe that it’s Midterm already! 6th Class have really impressed us with their determination and kindness so far. Here is what we have been doing this month!

Scientist Katie visited the class to talk about her research in TCD on immunology. We were lucky enough to be able to take some bacteria samples and watch them grow.

A few students from 6th Class were invited to represent the school at Christ Church Cathedral in town for the annual diocesan service. It was great fun and because the children’s represented KOTG so well, they were treated to McDonalds!

The Student Council have been working hard to create fun events for the school. Their latest idea was a Cinema and Pyjama day in the school which everyone loved. Each classroom was showing a different movie.

The class were given a challenge to work on their persuasive writing and language skills. They had to sell “unsellable” homes to 5th Class. They had to come up with very creative ways to convince their customers that cracks in the wall or ghosts in the attic were attractive traits to have in a home! 5th Class visited each “home” and eventually made an offer on their favourite.

6th Class have been learning about ‘Sa Bhaile’ during Gaeilge lessons and made their own MTV Cribs videos for the class to watch. They wrote their own scripts and then got to work around the school.

Finally, we celebrated Harvest and the end of term by playing some fun and messy games! There was bobbing for apples, face in flour and trying to cut chocolate with a knife, fork, gloves, hat and a scarf!

September

September was a great month for 6th Class. We figured out all the new routines, got used to the homework and had lots of fun! Here are some of our highlights.

We finished our mixed media portraits which are proudly displayed outside the classroom.

We started Irish by going over the basics. We have been enjoying using the writing offices to help us write nonsense sentences. Our main focuses at the moment are grammar and spelling.

Our class shop has been open which has meant we have been buying lots of exciting items! Bandanas, Pom Pom Keyrings and stickers are the favourites at the moment.

Maths has been full of creativity, fun and building on skills from 5th Class. So far, we have covered 2D shape, lines and angles and place value. A highlight was the escape room where we battled to unlock the chest first. Well done to Ryan, Darragh and Isaac who won!

Finally, we have been looking at Multiple Intelligences and discovered that we are all “smart” in our own ways. We took a test to discover which intelligences we match. Our results were very interesting.

A New Year!

We welcomed our new 6th Class students to school on Wednesday and what a bunch they are! They are full of enthusiasm and excitement for their final year in Kill o’ the Grange.

We started off the day with a treasure hunt. The class raced to find all the get-to-know-you questions.

We have been very excited to welcome the new Junior Infant children to school. 6th Class are their buddies so they wrote welcoming notes for them. We will be having lots of buddy time this year!

The most competitive and intense dodgeball match that Ms Harris has ever seen took place on Thursday! Denis, Diane and Dave even got involved!

We are creating some collage and mixed media artwork at the moment to represent us and all of our interests. We used credit cards to scrape paint which created some interesting shapes.

Finally, we are delighted to be part of the Student Council this year and we are focusing on the “House System”. We used mentimeter to share ideas and hopes for the year!
